Common questions

How do I enable SpeakPeek in Safari?

Open the SpeakPeek Mac app and use its button to open Safari settings. In Safari Settings > Extensions, enable SpeakPeek and allow access to the websites you want to use. Open or refresh a normal webpage, then hover over a word or select text. The current Safari app is for macOS; it does not include an iPhone or iPad extension.

Why is there no sound?

Check the extension’s enabled switch, select a voice for the text’s language, and test another webpage. Voices come from your browser and operating system; install the desired system voices if necessary. Check Mac volume and output settings.

Why do phonetics or definitions need a network?

Chinese pinyin, bundled Chinese definitions and many English pronunciation readings work locally. Other or missing lookups use Free Dictionary API or Wiktionary. Both display options are on by default. Turn off both in the popup to stop dictionary requests.

Why does the extension not work on a particular page?

Check website permissions and refresh the page after enabling the extension. Browser settings pages and some protected pages cannot run extensions. Text inside images and some embedded frames may not be available to the extension.

Where are shortcuts and settings?

Open the SpeakPeek toolbar popup for voice, speed, hover, phonetics, definitions and shortcut bindings. Safari does not provide the Chrome shortcut editor. If a shortcut conflicts with Safari or macOS, use the Speak button or another available control.
